Alongside the shadowy sipper shown here, this 17th century Dutch mezzotint includes a short epithet on love and drinking. Used in the 17th-19th centuries primarily as a means of reproducing paintings, mezzotints (meaning half-tone) allowed the creation of rich, gradational prints. In this process, metal printmaking plates were roughened with thousands of tiny dots that would retain ink, producing darker areas, whereas the smooth parts of the plate would produce light areas.
