An idyllic late night collection highlight 🌌
An artistic style of early 20th-century Japan, 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯-𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢 prints were created mostly for a Western audience, appealing to a taste for romanticized and nostalgic views of rural Japan. Meanwhile, Japanese art students were trained in Western traditions, as cross-cultural exchange during the Meiji era introduced Western art, architecture, and fashion to Japan.
Artists at the time would have been well-versed in historical Japanese styles, as well as recent trends in Western art. Romantic scenes like this one present an idealized look into traditional, rural Japan, a sharp contrast to the shifting, globalized landscape of urban life.
Shown here: Takahashi Hiroaki, "Enjoying Evening Cool," circa 1926-1927.
