How much money would you give to build a national monument? In the 1850s, contribution boxes like the one above were placed in post offices nationwide to collect funds for the Washington Monument. 💵
This particular box was used in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. After the Washington Monument's completion in 1885, Great Barrington's town clerk returned the box to the philanthropic society that had organized the collection drive, who later donated it to the "National Museum." (Fun fact: the box still had "three dollars and six and a half cents" inside when the society received it. The society kept the money; we got the empty box). Earlier this week, the Washington Monument in D.C. re-opened after a three year closure. Follow the link in our bio to learn about how the Washington Monument was built (and see more objects from its century-spanning story). #AmericanHistory #MonumentHistory #PhilanthropyHistory #MAHistory #DCHistory #MassachusettsHistory #Philanthropy #WashingtonMonument
