Gertrude Ederle was the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
Already an Olympic Gold medalist and world record-holder, Ederle set out to swim the 21 miles on August 6, 1926. As she progressed, the weather became so bad that her trainers urged her to come out of the water, but she refused to stop.
After 14 hours and 31 minutes, Ederle became the sixth person to swim the Channel—beating the times of the previous five men by nearly two hours.
Her achievement helped establish the place of women in competitive sports.
This 1925 photograph is in @smithsoniannpg, and the watertight goggles Ederle designed for her Channel swim are in our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. #BecauseOfHerStory
