Hitting the pool or beach this weekend? How'd you like to wear a wool swimsuit?
This 1890s women’s bathing suit, on display at our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館, is an example of the voluminous bathing dress that had been standard beachwear since the 1860s.
When wet, an average bathing dress weighed 25 pounds. That doesn't include the soggy stockings.
After about 1910, women began to wear them without corsets (can you imagine???), and in the 1920s knit-wear manufacturers introduced streamlined one-piece suits that made it possible to actually swim, not just soak.
