T.C. Cannon’s bold brushstrokes, blocks of vibrant colors and sometimes unsettling imagery shout from his canvases.
His pieces often juxtapose traditional Native American culture with symbols of Western society, as in "Two Guns Arikara," which shows a soldier wearing traditional Plains Indian adornments with his U.S. military scout uniform. Purple Victorian wallpaper pops behind him.
Cannon was one of the most influential, innovative, and talented Native American artists of the 20th-century. Some of his work reflects not only the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that surrounded him but also the conflicts within himself. "T.C. Cannon: At the Edge of America," at @smithsoniannmai in New York through Sept. 16, celebrates Cannon’s creative range and artistic legacy through his paintings, works on paper, poetry, and music.
