Carlotta Walls wore this outfit on her first day of school in 1957. Walls (whose last name is now LaNier) was starting her sophomore year as a member of the Little Rock Nine, integrating Little Rock Central High School.
She and her mother went shopping for a special look for a special day and found what she called "the perfect outfit," this alphabet-patterned skirt and blouse that are now in our @nmaahc.
When segregationists attempted to bar LaNier and her classmates from integrating the school, President Dwight Eisenhower called on the U.S. Army and federalized the Arkansas National Guard to protect them and ensure their attendance. LaNier persevered to be the first African American girl to graduate from the school in 1960. #APeoplesJourney #BecauseOfHerStory
