This one was photographed at Templestowe College’s Freshwater Ecology and Marine Biology Department. In the wild, this species is most often found in small and clear freshwater streams. Within this ecosystem, the gudgeon relies on muddy stream bottoms, wood debris, rocks, and leaf litter to act as cover should the fish need to perform a disappearing act. As a species that is entirely dependent on its aquatic habitat, the snakehead gudgeon is also dependent upon us to help keep streams and other waterways clean. Pick up litter on your next walk around your neighborhood and make sure everything you collect is discarded of properly.
