Meet the argus monitor from northern Australia and southern New Guinea. Reaching up to five feet in length, this large lizard spends most of its time on the ground, digging large burrows to take shelter in. Despite its preference for the ground, this species will forage in trees, seeking out eggs, vertebrates, and invertebrates that might make a nice meal. When threatened or on the lookout for potential prey, argus monitors will “tripod”; raising up on their hind legs and supporting themselves with their tail - a rare and unusual behavior. Recently this species has experienced population declines following the arrival of cane toads (which are toxic when consumed), an invasive species in Australia. However, most of the monitor’s distribution is outside of the toad’s potential range, meaning that the species as a whole is not at risk of extinction. #Worldlizardday #argusmonitor #longtongue #yellowspots #Australia #NewGuinea #PhotoArk #savetogether

Cane toads have entered Western Australia and well into NSW. The monitors, snakes and fresh water crocs will soon be gone. I’ve been in NT on holiday for 3 weeks now, actively looking for reptiles and all I’ve found is invasive species. Worst part is, no one seems to care. RIP Australia

Our ecosystem in SW Florida supports a wide variety of invasive species. We have so many cane toads now they will never be eliminated. The fact that the cane toad infestation will save us from the Argus Monitor is appreciated.

I've seen specials that talk about those cane toads , and they are horrific. I'm pretty terrified of monitor lizards, but this one is really beautiful.

I don’t remember this type of monitor from my recent visit to Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, which was generally thorough.
