This statuesque beauty is a clouded leopard @houstonzoo. These cats, which are native to Southeast Asia, got their name because of their spots, which resemble clouds. Officially listed as a species in the 1800’s, there is still very little that we know about this species nearly 200 years later due to their secretive nature. ​Most of what we know about clouded leopard behavior actually comes from observing them in zoos. In the wild, its rain forest habitat is often divided into small, unconnected patches of forest by industrial logging and the development of agricultural areas, including vast palm oil plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia. If clouded leopards cannot move freely within their home range, they lose access to vital resources and can't find a mate, which leads to a decrease in genetic diversity. ​You can help protect habitat for these cats by choosing food and beauty products containing palm oil that is certified as sustainable.
