Commercial hunting was once the greatest threat to this species, but today, the biggest threat facing walruses is the loss of stable sea ice due to climate change. Walruses feed on the ocean floor in the relatively shallow waters of the continental shelf, where the sea ice sustains a rich food web. Sea ice is also a resting place for this species in between meals, and females will often leave their young on this frozen platform while they forage. Without the sea ice, walruses must swim longer distances to find food and a place to rest, which means burning through hard-earned energy stores that the walrus needs to survive. Warming conditions also mean more water vessels are able to venture into remote ecosystems that were once inaccessible, increasing the likelihood of boat strikes, water contamination, and entanglement in marine debris. bylegtheking i cant believe it, a scientific magazine always telling people that in order to save the world and the life in it we need to drive bikes .____. , dont get me wrong we as individuals must do our part, changing our diets and the way we live and transport ourselfs. but im amazed at how this magazine sistematically overlooks the impact of meat based diets and the gigantic impact of the capitalistic way of producing and the corporations behind it, the corporations behind every main activity thats destroying our world: fracking, deforestation, pollution. this sistem leads peoples greed and consuption of shit we dont need on. if u actually care for animals stop focusing on the actions of individuals and start criticizing the companies that destroy the world and the capitalistic way of producing -.-
