I remember going to a talk by @シャウナ・コックジー a few years ago and she said something like ‘when I was young I knew I didn’t want to live in the dirt in caves and climb, I wanted to be an athlete’. Although I admired the sentiment I’ll never forget it because I felt precisely the opposite. As soon as I left school I sought out dirty caves or ledges or tents to live in and go climbing. I’ve never really thought of climbing as a real sport like tennis that you train for and I’ve found it difficult to considered myself as a proper athlete (despite being a professional athlete 🧐). I remembered thinking if I climb 8c then that probably means I’m an athlete. But that came around and I even did another one and still I didn’t really think of myself as an athlete. This might be a bit of imposter syndrome but also just because climbing always meant too much to just be another sport and being a climber always felt like being more than an athlete. And climbing outdoors always took priority over training indoors. But... this summer I have decided to train more and work on my athleticism! Let’s see where it takes me. 💪 Thanks coach @davidmason85 for being patient with me. Jonny Baker shot from Salathe El Cap @blackdiamond

It is a way of life I agree with this but I think being a professional sportsman/women eg boxer can also be classed as a way of life, so I don't think climbing is overally unique in this sense. Though as a climber I believe it is obviously hahaha. And by definition of athlete I guess a climber meets that definition. . person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. But I guess it's what sits with you best. Climbing is full of strange refusal to be labelled lol I've met trad climbers who refuse to accept bouldering is climbing, I've met sport climbers who believe trad climbers aren't climbers they're just suicidal and I've not boulderers who think a harness is an term for emotional support. Whatever it all means I just find it unbelievable impressive when people persue and push themselves in any chosen activity from climbing to chess to football to curling

My daughter is going through this. She watched @shaunacoxsey train and competing as a kid, said “I want to do that”. So I learned to climb with her. Best thing in my life.
Then we saw @backshall.steve hanging off a Tepui on telly and she said “I want to do that” so we’re learning to lead climb. I’ve tried too instil a sense of adventure in her, to not be another person who leaves one box in the morning to drive to another box all day, and return. She interviewed Shauna when she was 9 for a school project and one thing stuck, “what’s the best thing about climbing” “getting to the top”. That can be taken a couple of ways I guess. I’m lucky that she has great role models in you two to inspire her!

Great post @hazel_findlay ❤️ I remember us talking about this at the time. I’m somewhere in the middle - my happiest place is hanging off a rock face but I also enjoy training and I know that doing some of the latter helps me get to a greater variety of places outdoors and to feel strong in my body when I get there 👍🏻💪🏻

Ditto that. I feel the same. Climbing is much more than the ‘sport’ it has turned into. Yet, its plays its magic card and captures a few individuals and it’s meaning takes on something else. Morphing it into more. That said, I certainly have come to love training in the past 5 years!!!

Definitely felt the same as you about training and comps 😂 being outdoors has always been more of a draw but great to see everyone inspired and motivated in different ways! Hard to feel like an there when it’s something we all just love doing! 😊

I guess when you're a "professional," we have to see a blatantly commercial story or product endorsement from you from time to time...you probably got paid from "Black Diamond" with this picture. It's seems sort of sneaky somehow, subliminal.
