"Ebony and Jet magazine helped shape our nation’s history, allowing Americans—of all colors—to see the full panorama of the African American experience." — Lonnie G. Bunch III, Smithsonian Secretary and founding director of @nmaahc.
Our @nmaahc will receive photos from the archive of Johnson Publishing Company, publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines. It's the most significant collection of photos cataloging African American life in the 20th century.
The archive offers insight into everyday African American life—when Ebony was founded in 1945 by John H. Johnson, it provided views of Black America never seen before in popular media. The historic images in the archive capture moments of celebration and success, but also grief and horror.
These editions of Jet and Ebony (from 1955, 1973 and 1968) are currently in the collection of our @nmaahc. #APeoplesJourney © Johnson Publishing Company © Ebony

❤️ I remember being in the Marine Corps in the early 1980s and going on deployments and there would be a stack of jet and ebony magazines for the rest of the guys to read through. For some of my fellow Marines it was the 1st time they ever seen black images outside of television. Some didn't know how to handle it. One fellow marine even went so far as to be offended because the word black was capitalized in the magazine. A fellow blue eyed blond haired marine had to explain to him that it was a black magazine for black people and that it was OK to capitalize the word black

Happy Day, I do remember when I tried on being a trader but incurred so much loss, but compared to investing with Mr John @john_lan_beckham , I became an investor and earning atleast $5100 bi-weekly! Always Thankful

“Where is third man in Till lynching”. Interesting since @propublica is looking for the 3rd man in the photo of 3 frat brothers who shot up and posed with guns at the Emmett Till historical marker in Mississippi

Nice how our leaders along with big corporations have destroyed the black middle class. Now, half of them just promote racism against whites as the reason. Most white families are struggling, too!!!

Loved those magazines when I was young.... my late great uncle had a ton of old Ebony magazines that he kept and my family later inherited . I still look at those from time to time 👍🏽❤️
