Fifty years ago today, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin strapped into the command module Columbia and launched to the Moon atop a massive Saturn V rocket. 🚀 The astronauts spent nearly the entire eight-day mission in the command module, except for the 27 hours Armstrong and Aldrin spent in the lunar module and on the surface of the Moon.
While Armstrong and Aldrin were on the lunar surface, Collins stayed in Columbia, orbiting the Moon by himself 14 times. He lost contact with everyone for half of each orbit, as the command module traveled over the far side of the Moon. 🌑
The command module is the only piece of the crewed #Apollo11 spacecraft to return to Earth and is in our collection. It is currently on tour as part of @sitesexhibitions’ #DestinationMoon travelling exhibition, and will be back on permanent display here at @airandspacemuseum in D.C. in 2022. #Apollo50 #AirSpacePhoto #IdeasThatDefy

mlkebeyvr One of the greatest museum moments in my life was being able to actually touch Apollo 11 and a moon rock. Smithsonian you ROCK. I watched the lunar landing from Calgary. I should have been an Astronaut like Chris Hadfield and Dr Roberta Bondar!

airandspacemuseum @but_dear It was in our entry hall until it was taken off display for conservation. It’s currently on tour at the Museum of Flight and will go back on display in Destination Moon in 2022.

green.plz @thirdeyeshaman that part of the capsule is actually somewhat tranquil during reentry; the brunt of the force and heat is deflected by the heat shielding on the bottom of the capsule.

nimitzsailor83 I watched everything as a kid in my living room in the late ‘60’s. Then I went to the museum in DC and saw everything in person decades later. So very awesome!

mattymerrygoround My father was one of the many aerospace engineers who helped build that capsule and the others. He worked on all the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions.
