Fifty years ago today, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin strapped into the command module Columbia and launched to the Moon atop a massive Saturn V rocket. 🚀 The astronauts spent nearly the entire eight-day mission in the command module, except for the 27 hours Armstrong and Aldrin spent in the lunar module and on the surface of the Moon.
While Armstrong and Aldrin were on the lunar surface, Collins stayed in Columbia, orbiting the Moon by himself 14 times. He lost contact with everyone for half of each orbit, as the command module traveled over the far side of the Moon. 🌑
The command module is the only piece of the crewed #Apollo11 spacecraft to return to Earth and is in our collection. It is currently on tour as part of @sitesexhibitions#DestinationMoon travelling exhibition, and will be back on permanent display here at @airandspacemuseum in D.C. in 2022. #Apollo50 #AirSpacePhoto #IdeasThatDefy
