We got the #Apollo11 gang back together.
Apollo spacesuits are made of about 20 different materials, many of which were designed for a specific one-time use—getting to the Moon. 👨🚀 These materials, including then-modern plastics, were not designed to last. Conditions like lighting, temperature and humidity all have an impact on the materials, so it is important to rotate spacesuits on and off display and put them in our state-of-the-art, environmentally controlled storage areas to “rest.” Recently, with Buzz Aldrin’s spacesuit off display for conservation, and Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit getting ready to go back on display, we at @airandspacemuseum decided to pull Michael Collins’ spacesuit out of storage for a few hours to reunite them. The three spacesuits (left to right: Aldrin, Collins, Armstrong) are photographed together here for the first time in decades. #Apollo50 #AirSpacePhoto #IdeasThatDefy

How the conservation of each interior polymers are going? As far as NY Times article from 2018 told, they were a huge problem. The reason I ask is because I also do a research on polymers-based contemporary art, and knowing that you guys could put them back to display made me think some solutions were found :)

@wherevertheyroam Collins’ suit is in the middle. It is an intravehicular suit, so it wasn't configured for use with the personal life support system (PLSS) and does not have connectors for that, along with other differences because he stayed in the command module.

@deh.mrgn Thanks for your interest! We have a Q&A with the conservator saved to our highlights. You can also find updates on the conservation process at airandspace.si.edu. There is a recent blog post on the home page from July.

@janeayeee Thanks for bringing them up! We have a story at womenshistory.si.edu about the many women who made the Moon landing possible, which includes the talented women who constructed spacesuits.

Met a gentleman recently who whipped out his wallet and showed me his Moon Rover Driver’s License and personal photo with Werner von Braun. Definitely a well-deserved humble brag.
