In this case, the lesson literally starts in our own backyard! Knowing that butterflies, bees and other pollinators are in real trouble, we tilled up the grass in front and behind our office in order to plant Asclepias syriaca, or common milkweed - a species of milkweed native to our area that monarch caterpillars depend on.
