How did this gray four-eyed opossum get its name? It is the result of a unique adaptation that this nocturnal creature uses to fool potential predators! The opossum has white patches of fur above its eyes that give it the appearance of being awake, even when sleeping soundly. If this defense mechanism fails, the gray four-eyed opossum does not “play dead” like the Virginia opossum – instead, it is aggressive and ready for battle. A resident of Central and South America, this species does not have a well-defined territory, and home range stability depends on easy access to food and shelter. While adaptable and not currently in danger, this opossum, like many other species, is counting on us to adopt wildlife-friendly behaviors to secure their future for generations to come.
