“Modern Monetary Theory” is an increasingly popular economic theory that’s been supported by Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
But Fed Chair Jerome Powell isn’t a fan — in fact, he said the theory is “just wrong.”
MMT is the idea that the national debt and budget deficit won’t be an issue for the United States, as long as the Fed can keep interest rates low without sparking inflation.
Powell said he hasn’t read up on the theory, but added that he’s heard “some pretty extreme claims” about how it could be implemented.
