Retail sales dropped so sharply in December that some economists are saying the data may be suspect — but others say it’s a warning of recession.⁣

Retail sales for December dropped 1.2%, according to the Commerce Department. That’s the largest decline since September 2009, when the economy was still recovering from the financial crisis.⁣

The plunge in retail sales was a shock, considering the data was expected to show a 0.2% gain.⁣

Even if the data was correct or not, it still spooked Wall Street into slashing fourth quarter GDP forecasts. However, GDP saw better than expected growth in the fourth quarter with a 2.6% raise.⁣
