Known locally as the Cascabel, the Aruba Island rattlesnake can only be found in Aruba and is restricted to the southern end of the island as development has greatly reduced its natural habitat. Threatened with extinction, efforts were launched to save the species, including the designation of Arikok National Park as a refuge for much of this snake’s population. Local government outreach and education programs have helped to change the perception of this species among locals – instead of being feared the snake is now promoted as a national symbol. @stlzoo, where this snake was photographed, is part of the Aruba Island Rattlesnake Species Survival Plan Program which is a cooperative breeding program between several zoos working together to ensure the Cascabel is here for many generations to come.
