Did you know caribou are able to see light wavelengths around 350-320 nanometers, well outside of the so-called visible spectrum? The ability to see the shorter wavelengths gives caribou an important advantage in their harsh environment: it allows them to spot lichens, which absorb UV light and appear black in a sea of highly reflective snow. That’s a big lead in the quest for a meal—an important part of surviving the Arctic.
