What’s this long-and-lean critter? It’s the trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus)! The unusual looking fish camouflages itself by quickly changing colors to blend in with its surroundings—and by swimming vertically, snout down, to better blend in with such upright reef inhabitants as sea fans and pipe sponges. This tactic makes the trumpetfish a successful ambush predator. When searching for prey, it disappears into the background of a reef. When the hunter spots a target, it opens its mouth—a gape that can be the full diameter of its body!—and slurps up its prey in a swift motion. What’s on its menu? A variety of fish such as spotted goatfish, yellowtail damselfish, and tomtates.
