Get to know the Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris)! Originally from sub-saharan Africa, this species has been introduced around the world, including in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Its unique appearance includes black-and-white speckled plumage, a blue-and-red featherless face, a hanging wattle, and a bony casque on top! This may come as a surprise, but despite its stocky build the Helmeted Guineafowl can fly in short bursts. But it typically only takes flight when in danger or to reach a roost.
