No… this is not the “hot” Mandarin Duck of Central Park. In sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar lives the smallest species of waterfowl in the world: the African Pygmy Goose (Nettapus auritus). It only grows up to 36 centimeters (14 inches) long and weighs in around 10 ounces (0.6 pounds)! It lives in habitats such as swamps, marshes, and ponds, where it feeds mostly on seeds of water lilies and other aquatic plants, with a snack of a small invertebrate or fish on occasion. How do you tell the difference between males and females? Males have patches of green and a yellow bill, while females are grayish with a darker bill.
