スミソニアン博物館のインスタグラム(smithsonian) - 9月25日 05時51分
Hi! We’re Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (@smithsonianfolkways), and we’re taking over the Smithsonian Instagram this week. For the last 70 years, our mission has been to record, document and disseminate the sounds of the world. We are something like a museum of sound, with more than 3,500 albums in our ever-growing collection.
To start things off, here’s Elizabeth Cotten, one of our most beloved artists, performing her original song “Freight Train.” Born in North Carolina in 1895, Cotten’s talent went undiscovered for decades until she had a chance encounter with the Seeger family in the mall where she worked. After reuniting a young, lost Peggy Seeger with her mother, the family hired Cotten as a maid and soon heard her immense and unique talent.
Cotten became a folk music sensation and she was eventually awarded a Grammy in 1985. Her impact continues to be felt in all genres of music.
