James Bond got his name because author Ian Fleming thought it was the most bland name he'd ever heard. The real-life James Bond was an American ornithologist who wrote "Birds of the West Indies," a book that Fleming, an avid bird watcher, had loved in his youth.
This is a page from the book—with an illustration of the Cuban tody species by Don R. Eckelberry—in our @silibraries. We also have some bird specimens James Bond, ornithologist, collected from the Caribbean in @smithsoniannmnh's collection.
