Designing captivating artwork for hundreds of albums isn’t easy, especially on a tight budget. @smithsonianfolkways founder Moses Asch solved this problem by working with a dedicated team of artists, giving them freedom in designing and laying out album covers as long as it was inexpensive, looked great and was true to the music.
The original Folkways album covers, especially those of designer Ronald Clyne, are now often as famous as the music inside, and are studied by scholars for their use of two-color printing, field photography and expressionistic illustrations. Here are a few of our favorites:
