For a million reasons, many unrelated to Instagram itself, I rarely post here anymore. But mostly I think I've just gotten tired of participating in an ever-shifting social experiment, designed not to make communities stronger or relationships better, or to push art forward, or to even just put a smile on our faces...but an experiment designed to make an incomprehensibly powerful company even more powerful, at the expense of its users.
An experiment that none of us knowingly signed up for.
Even the new commenting format, with its strange flavour of algorithmic favouritism, has evolved (a word I use loosely) into something alienating and anti-social.
I owe so much to this app. It brought me to my husband. It took me on a wild career path. It introduced me to new friends and new perspectives from all around the world.
But when you love someone, when you REALLY care about them, you speak up when they make hurtful decisions. You speak up when they're greedy. You speak up when they seek to conquer not co-exist, to manipulate not facilitate.
So I guess that's what I'm doing here. I'm speaking up. Also, I'm posting a selfie. Because this is Instagram, after all. xo.
