Idyllic, right? We celebrated our 10th anniversary a few days early with a picnic. I scooped mouthfuls of my favourite local salsa with salty tortilla chips. Matt squeezed a little packet of mustard onto his sandwich. For a while we had the whole place to ourselves—Adam and Eve and their poodle, Peggy Sue. It rained, but rain feels good when you feel good. The moisture beaded on my fleece.
Two trucks pulled up. Someone leaned on their horn. Loud voices chewed up the silence as we swallowed the last of our lunch.
“They’re young,” I said, feeling old. “I’m glad they’re enjoying this place, too.”
But then the vileness.
Oh the vileness.
Racist. Ignorant. AWFUL. I will not repeat a word of it here.
And for the first time in my whole life, nothing in me moved to speak up. Because I imagined what was probably hiding inside those trucks, more accessible out here than healthcare or education or fair wages or hope. Yes, our future is armed with more than just hate.
I was afraid and I said nothing.
