This photo has lived on my fridge for years. That's my Uncle Gene on the left and my dad, Jim, on the right. In the middle, I'm 100% thinking about Punky Brewster, who posed similarly during a fave fishing episode. She was my hero and so is my dad.
I'm seeing a wide mix of Father's Day messages today on social media. I can feel the swirl of complicated feelings from those who've lost dads, those who never knew their dads, those who don't wish to be dads, those who don't especially LIKE their dads...and I get it. Mother's Day, for the past decade or so, digs in me a similar well of conflicting emotions. I celebrate my mom even as I struggle with the idea that I'll probably never be one, and there's no neat, cheery way to caption that particular picture. It's complex. It's personal. It's not all good. It's not all bad. It's real life. And real life doesn't always fit into this space.
Just remember: Share what you want to share. Don't share what you don't. Be here if it feels good. Be somewhere else if it doesn't. YOU MAKE THE RULES.
