Forget freeze-dried ice cream. Space food has gotten an upgrade. These are “Space Rocks,” a chocolate dessert created by Danish chef Thorsten Schmidt. They were served at the end of a three-course meal prepared for astronauts living far away from home on the International Space Station. Hidden inside each was a heartwarming surprise: a handwritten note from the astronauts’ families and loved ones. “The second after they started reading, they went quiet,” says Thorsten. “If we want to go further into space than we are now, we need to go from just surviving to living. Food is more than being hungry. It’s about being human.” To learn more about the banquet in space, visit go.ted.com/spacechef
