Check out this eel robot! Not only does it look creepy-cool, but it can also detect and monitor water pollution. Bio-roboticist Auke Ijspeert and his team created this five-foot-long slithery invention that they call the Envirobot. Auke often takes inspiration from living organisms, and he was particularly fascinated by the way eels move. As the Envirobot swims, sensors take measurements and send the data directly to a computer, revealing important information such as whether mercury and other pollutants are present in the water. Its portability also makes it easy to use during emergencies like oil spills and other natural disasters. “The ultimate goal is to have a system where not only a single robot but maybe ten robots could collectively create a map of pollution,” Auke says.
