Did you know fish use a social network to talk about food? Basically, reef fish snack on algae, which is also great for the survival of coral reefs. The problem is that the reef is often exposed to predators, putting these fish in harm’s way. That’s why the fish use movement to communicate when the coast is clear. Once one swims into the coral reef algae buffet, others start to do the same — and they stay longer and eat more when they’re in a group. “Our analyses indicate that fish simply copying other fish in their social network could account for over 60 percent of the algae eaten by the fish community, and thus could be critical to the flow of energy and resources through coral reef ecosystems,” says @TEDfellow and marine biologist Mike Gil.
