Would you ever take your own natural body odor and send it to a romantic partner? It’d be a smell selfie, or a smelfie, as designer Ani Liu calls it. Ani combines art and synthetic biology, cataloging and collecting bacteria from different sites of a person’s body to create a visual representation of their scent. This is just one of many projects she works on that explores the intersection of technology and sensory perception. “Through these projects, I'm asking questions like, how do we define nature? How do we define nature when we can reengineer its properties, and when should we do it? Can biotechnology be used to create work as moving as music?” she asks.
