These are the hands of modern slaves. The dyed black hands are the father’s and the blue and red hands are his sons. Each day they submerge silk in toxic dye up to their elbows, and they receive no pay for their work. Photographer Lisa Kristine visited villages in India where entire families are enslaved in the silk trade. Her work documents slavery all over the world, shining a light on the brutal reality for the estimated 40 million people enslaved today. “[My] images are not of issues,” she says. “They are of people, real people, like you and me, all deserving of the same rights, dignity and respect in their lives.” To see more of Lisa’s work, follow her at @lisakristinephotography and watch her #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/modernslavery
