From @michellemillarfisher, co-curator (w @paolantonelli) of the upcoming exhibition #ItemsMoMA. I'm in Lagos, Nigeria, to research at #LagosFashionWeek (@lfdw_ng). Yesterday, I moderated a discussion with two amazing designers, Banke Kuku (@bankekukutextiles) and Loza Maléombho (@lozamaleombho) about the centrality of textile craft and concept in their work. The conversation between us and the audience interrogated many questions, including: how do we value craft? What place for technology in this discussion? What about appropriation--of designers' ideas and of localized African textile traditions? How can we support and value the innovations produced everyday by designers in Nigerian and other African countries? How do we feel about the "Made in Africa" label? What is the vision for Nigerian fashion in the short and long terms? This discussion coincided with one of our exhibition items, Dutch Wax/African Waxprint. What is everyone's favorite waxprint use in fashion and design? And what are your thoughts on the questions above? We'd love to hear, below! More to come from me in Lagos throughout the day today.
