I am in India to research three of our 111 items--the sari, the salwar kameez, and the Kashmiri shawl. I'm visiting craftsmen and big factories, talking to designers contemporary and traditional, and gathering intelligence to complement my blessed ignorance.
In this image, from left to right, are Malika Verma Kashyap (content development and fashion and crafts expert), Rashmi Varma (fashion designer and co-author of the book Sar: The Essence of Indian Design), sari's foremost expert Rta Kapur (who wrote the amazing book 'Saris of India'), Rta's daughter and aunt in Rta's new residence and showroom in Delhi, now under construction.
Each item will be presented in the show with a stereotype that rendered it famous in the world in the 20th and 21st century, so I'm asking my Indian acquaintances what their choice is. Almost everyone, female or male, has a different "stereotype" sari in mind. I'm so not surprised... #ItemsMoMA
