It came codified, real constantly using music as the force to which to express our existence.” — Harry Belafonte Singer, actor, and activist Harry Belafonte, who passed away yesterday at the age of 96, used his exceptional talents to expand American culture, to make space for the beauty and accomplishments of black Americans. The artist Charles White was his friend, and a partner in that struggle for recognition. In 2018, Belafonte generously lent White’s drawings to his retrospective exhibition at MoMA, and discussed his friendship with White and their shared commitment to celebrating Black culture on #MoMAMagazine.
