“The smartphone affords a view of the front lines anywhere in the world, in any crisis and sometimes in real time…This is the democratization of video, and it’s happening at an unprecedented scale. It’s a mass medium in which we are all literate, that we all intimately know. It is also how we see—we see through our screens.” — Tiffany Sia

Tiffany Sia filmed “Never Rest/Unrest” between June and December 2019 during the most intense months of the Hong Kong protests.

Sia’s experimental film presents an alternative, embedded reportage of the protests, its handheld, low-fi perspective evading state surveillance in a city quaking with tumult, suppression, and subterfuge.

→ See Sia’s work in #Signals: How Video Transformed the World, a major exhibition bringing together over six decades of media works from the #MoMACollection. Over 70 key works reveal how artists have posed video as an agent of global change—from televised revolution to electronic democracy.
→ Tiffany Sia and Aria Dean, artists and thinkers at the forefront of media art today, join us for a Modern Mondays evening presenting a trio of Sia’s video works on May 1. Link in bio for tickets.
