From @paolantonelli, curator of the upcoming exhibition "Items: Is Fashion Modern?"
Today I visited the remarkable Design Museum Dharavi in Mumbai, a movable display of artifacts made by inhabitants of the Dharavi neighborhood. This "museum on wheels" exists for the exclusive benefit of the inhabitants of the neighborhood, to give them pride and awareness of their potential. It defied at first its public's understanding and was defined by the local children as "a magic show without the tricks." (So beautiful! That is how I will describe my curatorial practice from now on.)
Founders Jorge Mañes Rubio and Amanda Pinatih, and current curator Kruti Saraiya organize the program around thematic shows. The current one is inspired by the tarpaulins that cover most of the neighborhood during the monsoon season, which just ended. Craftsmen that normally work leather used tarpaulin to produce colorful objects, even some of our 111 items--the fanny pack, the messenger bag, and the baseball hat, for instance.
Some of the items in the exhibition will get new prototypes, commissioned expressly for the occasion. The commissions will be based on need and opportunity--say, a technological or material innovation, a new manufacturing technique, a meaningful interpretation, the convergence of political and social need.
