From @paolantonelli, curator of the upcoming exhibition "Items: Is Fashion Modern?":
The paduka, traditional Indian footwear made of wood, were once ubiquitous and are today worn mostly by beggars and saintly Jain mystics.
Each of the 111 items in the exhibition will be presented in the form that rendered it influential and popular in the 20th and 21st century--the stereotype--and accompanied by previous versions that sometimes hark back several centuries--the archetypes. The Brazilian Havaianas flip-flops of rubber and plastic--one of the items--have many antecedents, paduka among them.
