Woodstock "Electrite" Typewriter, around 1925.
The Electrite, made by the Woodstock Typewriter Company of Chicago, was advertised as a typewriter that made "all typists experts." With an electric motor powering the strike mechanism, it was designed to make each key hit the paper with the same amount of force every time. In manual typewriters, a soft touch could result in text that was faint or hard to read.
To see fascinating and innovative typewriters from our collection, check out #TypeORama at the museum this Friday (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Curators will be on hand to answer questions about these unique devices, and Typewriter Rodeo will be taking requests for personalized poetry!
