This anti-vaccination publication is 90 years old. Authored by chiropractor Louis Siegfried, "The Quest" advocated a non-interventionist approach to health, framing vaccination as an "inherent poison" introduced into a healthy body. In 1926, Siegfried's child Belema was turned away from school because her parents refused to submit proof of vaccination. Siegfried was arrested.
Mass vaccination can arrest an epidemic, protecting those who are too young to be vaccinated or those who have suppressed immune systems. In early 20th-century America, where epidemics of diseases such as smallpox often ran rampant, compulsory vaccination made a great deal of sense as it protected large segments of the population. "The Quest" was just one of many journals founded to oppose vaccination. Some of the suspicion against vaccines came from the fact that scientists and physicians could not explain just WHY they worked.

This week, our #AmericaParticipates theme focuses on health—what we do to keep ourselves and each other healthy. ??? #MedHist #HistMed #MedTech #Vaccination #Zika #HealthHistory @worldhealthorganization @cdcgov
