Musician Ray Charles is known for these trademark Ray-Ban sunglasses, currently on display in the museum.
Charles started losing his vision at age four. His mom didn't let the disability get him down. Charles later said, "When I got to feeling sorry for myself, she'd get tough and say, 'You’re blind, you ain't dumb; you lost your sight, not your mind.' And she'd make me. . .see I could do almost anything anyone else could do." At age seven, Charles attended a school for children with vision or hearing loss in Florida. The school was strictly segregated and the African American facilities were significantly inferior. While Charles was given an elementary school education, one of his main tasks was sewing bands around straw booms. These are a gift of Gift of Ray Charles Enterprises, 1998.
