Happy Uncle Sam Day! While we might think of this iconic, bearded figure as having a stern expression, here’s a glimpse at his more playful and freewheeling side. Our “Object Project” team had fun testing out this Uncle Sam string rider toy, which is now on view.
The American Flyer of Chicago company produced these Uncle Sam toys between 1915 and the early 1930s. Balanced by a counterweight, Uncle Sam rides along a string while furiously pedaling his legs. Note: This toy is in our teaching collection, meaning it can be handled.
