Communication among first responders is important during an emergency. Engineers and officers of volunteer fire fighting companies would use "speaking trumpets" like this one to amplify their voices over the commotion to direct firefighters.
There are two types: fancy trumpets presented to #firefighters to honor their service and working trumpets that were used at conflagrations. This is an unadorned, hard-working trumpet with signs of wear and tear. It's somewhere between 100-125 years old.
