Today in 1850: The Golden State becomes 31st in union. This $5 coin from 1849 was minted by private firm of Norris, Gregg, and Norris. They were businessmen from New York who headed west and established a mint near San Francisco following the #GoldRush. Their products are commonly believed to be the first #California private gold coins.
