The names of 12 children appear on this card from 1809. In a town outside Boston, Dr. Amos Holbrook needed to prove that the smallpox vaccine worked. The public was skeptical and the disease was dangerous. As a public demonstration, these 12 kids were inoculated and then exposed to smallpox. None of them became ill. Word spread that the vaccine was safe and effective, a public health victory. Each kid received a special certificate explaining the experiment and praising the vaccine.
