World War II veteran Terry T. Shima is interviewed by NPR today in our "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibition. In spite of forced incarceration and rampant wartime prejudice, more than 33,000 second-generation Japanese Americans (nisei) volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Beginning February 19, 2014, we'll display the Congressional Gold Medal with which Congress officially recognized these soldiers' heroic. You're also invited to our Annual Day of Remembrance program from 10 AM - noon on the 19th. It will include an unveiling ceremony and panel discussion on the history of the medal and its importance.
