It's a tradition believed to have begun in Great Britain in the 13th century. You'd remove the design on a coin and replace it with your own. You could add your lover's initials, a religious symbol, or other personally meaningful design.
Our curator points out that these coins can be very mysterious--sometimes it's hard to even figure out what coin it used to be and what date it was created and then re-purposed. In her latest blog post, she weighed some of the coins to find out more about them. blog.americanhistory.si.edu
